Handy Work December 31, 2007

The hands for the Dreamer are well under construction. Once the ends of the finger segments are sealed and painted, I think this will turn out to be quite a striking object.

I really liked the (messy) way the work table looked after taking the hand picture. There was something satisfying about the composition the tools, chemicals and hardware were arranged.

Flak Attack December 25, 2007

Most of today was spent setting up the environment for the flak canon scene. I’m starting to get excited by the footage. Scenes are cutting together well. In fact, I’m really surprised at some of the shots once I put them into the editing time line. The imagery comes alive when its put into the context of the scene. I have also been going on some abstract visual tangents. It was tough at first to find the experimental vein. For some reason this scene put me in an exploratory mood. Several shots turned out very abstract indeed.

Epiphany struck as I was aimlessly driving through the icy city today.   I Figured out a structural configuration for the dreamers fingers.  The construction of them has been eluding me for months.  It’s the only part of her body that isn’t complete.  Wood dowels and copper wire.  More on that tomorrow.

The Spraybox December 22, 2007

My sole can of heirloom white came to a mournful end the other day as I was painting the flak cannon. It’s little German attendants went embarrassingly free of paint for quite some time. I havent been able to find another can of rustoleum heirloom white anywhere in town. The Lowes I bought it at redesigned their paint department and decided that my particular color of white was superfluous to their stock. I gave up after searching every hardware store in town. The only alternative I found was a can of Valspar. Its a pretty close match in color. Aargh! After the first spray coat I noticed it is much glossier than its predecessor. F! I’ll have to hit it with some mat medium after it dries.

A pile of GermansObjects in the spraybox

I’ve decided to add a bit of a dog fight as well to truly give the P-38 a run for its money. It will go up against two Japanese Zeros. There is a bit of historical fallacy here, but hey, it’s just a movie. Why would there be Japanese Zeros flying over Germany, or why would there be a German flak canon in Japan? Who the hell knows?

Test Edit Footage December 19, 2007

Online and up for debate! I’ve mixed some model footage with historical footage to see how it plays. I’m not sure if I should keep everything black and white or retain the color in the model shots.

I’m sort of liking the old film filter + color footage mixed with the b&w historical footage. The constant audio keeps things cohesive.
